For this second offering of the ‘Colour Concert’ series, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Geoff Grey offers two Capital Region premieres and an Australian premiere. H. Owen Reed’s ‘La Fiesta Mexicana’ (1954) leads and, as the title suggests, is a musical representation of the three key elements he sees in the traditional Mexican fiesta – dance, worship and carnival – with all their colour, passion and textures.
A celebration of the clarity and beauty of our event theme ‘Sapphire’ follows, with one of the contemporary stars of wind repertoire composition. John Mackey’s ‘Hymn to a Blue Hour’ (2010) takes the listener through an evocative yet calming existence through the period of twilight where there’s neither full daylight nor complete darkness.
Following interval, Leslie Bassett’s rarely heard ‘Sounds, Shapes and Symbols’ (1977) is a formative work for the wind ensemble genre, and although now forty years after its writing, it’s a thrill to finally bring this to Australian audiences.
David Maslanka’s 2013 ‘Requiem’, the second of his works featured in this concert series, then guides us through a sublime display of his thorough passion and understanding of the genre, unrelenting in beauty and triumph, while Frank Ticheli’s 1997 masterpiece ‘Blue Shades’ will conclude the event, bringing to The Q a level of raw excitement that simply has to be experienced to be believed.
Come and celebrate this amazing ensemble with 35 of the Capital Region’s finest professional players as they combine to bring only the best wind literature to the stage. Quite simply – they’re captivating, engaging and brilliant! Be quick to secure your tickets for this one-off event.
