CANBERRA WIND SYMPHONY
‘POWER AND THE PASSION’
Friday 24th of May 2019 at 8.00 pm
To herald the first program of the 2019 ‘Art Music on Stage’ Concert Series, join the stunning Canberra Wind Symphony for an evening of musical brilliance as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Geoff Grey, selecting from the finest composers of the past four decades, delivers a program demonstrating the full power and passion the wind orchestra experience brings to the beauty of live music.
Claude T. Smith’s 1982 genre masterpiece ‘Festival Variations’ opens, with its glorious romanticism and majestic technical interjections setting the scene for a night to remember. The five quirky movements of Jack Stamp’s 2004 ‘Bandancing’ follow, paying homage to contemporary dance through a funky shuffle, sultry tango, jazz waltz, poignant ballad and a samba with fugue.
‘Dynamica’ (1997) from Jan Van der Roost closes out the first act in emphatic fashion with a fiery and energetic display of the professional wind ensemble’s exciting diversity, challenging the woodwinds, brass and percussion in equal measure.
Following interval the audience will be treated to a second iconic work from the past. Alfred Reed’s ‘2nd Suite’ has four distinctive movements that will instantly transfer guests to the steamy climes of the Latin-America region as we drink in music influenced by the colours of Cuba, the Carribean, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.
Optimism and introspection share the stage in this program’s regional Premiere, with Samuel R. Hazo’s ‘The Stillness of Remembering’ (2015) bringing with it both the joy and the pain of celebrating the life of a departed friend. To conclude, this triumphant event ends as majestically as it began, with Johan de Meij’s 1987 musical portrait of the noble wizard ‘Gandalf’ from J.R.R.R Tolkein’s classic Lord of the Rings.
