‘On Leros 2018’
Athens September 2018 – A hardy band of excited artists and partners from New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland gathered for an adventure on a distant Greek Island in the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea – Leros.
Leros September/October 2018 – A flight over the many of the other islands in the Aegean took us to a little known jewel away from the tourist meccas of the more well-known Greek Islands. Leros and the nearby islands of Patmos and Lipsos provided the group with unceasing inspiration for their art works over the next ten days.
The rugged mountainous country crowned by a majestic castle fortress; sapphire and turquoise bays, beaches and inlets; the blue and white churches large and small; the bustling fishing and ferry ports; the cafes, bars and farmlets provided a limitless array of subjects and a vivid palette to satisfy all styles and desires.
The group was led by well-known Canberra Artist and regular Leros visitor over many years, Michael Winters. Michael has a long creative relationship with Leros, his first visit was in 1965. In 1995 the Islands Municipal Council made Michael an Honorary Citizen of Leros in recognition of long creative relationship with the island. Because of Michael’s long periods living on Leros, the artists were privileged to meet many of the island’s residents and hear the colourful and sometimes brutal inside tales and stories of the island’s extensive and varied history over millennia.
This Exhibition is the culmination of the works inspired by that enchanting ten days drawing and painting exclusively en plein air. There will be sketch books made at the time; as well as linocut and collagraph prints, drawings and paintings influenced by the experience.
