180 Mementos, 180 Objects
28 Sep - 14 Oct 2018
Join us – and some local champions – to celebrate the opening of this unique exhibition that explores the journey of Queanbeyan, NSW.
QUEANBEYAN, NSW
Established September 28, 1838
Proclaimed a Village in 1838 and today a vibrant regional city most widely known for its location on the doorstep of Australia’s national capital, Canberra, and its prodigious sporting prowess.
Truly a City of Champions, internationally recognised names including rugby legend David Campese, Formula One driver Mark Webber, and one of the country’s greatest sportspeople, undefeated World Squash Champion Heather McKay are just some of the talent it’s nurtured. Outside the sporting arena, the impressive list encompasses the likes of acclaimed author Miles Franklin, and one-time James Bond, George Lazenby.
With an Indigenous presence reaching back more than 21,000 years, Queanbeyan’s story is even more rich and varied. Over almost two centuries since the arrival of Europeans, it has encompassed extraordinary and far-reaching successes in everything from business and industry to cultural pursuits and the arts.
Come and explore this fascinating journey through 180 rare and unique Mementos that reveal as much about the progression of a nation as they do an isolated outpost that became an important border-town through to its modern incarnation as a cosmopolitan city.
